Where It All Started

Argument-Driven Inquiry (ADI) was created by Dr. Victor Sampson, a professor of science education and leading researcher in instructional design. His goal was to create a classroom model that would help students learn how to think and work like scientists—not just memorize facts.

Key Findings from ADI Research

Developed with teachers and tested in real classrooms, ADI is grounded in research about how students learn best. Since its introduction, the model has evolved through ongoing studies and has been implemented in thousands of classrooms around the world.

Improves Critical Thinking and Conceptual Understanding

Multiple studies confirm that ADI significantly enhances students’ critical thinking skills across grade levels and subject areas. Students learn to analyze evidence, draw conclusions, and construct scientifically accurate explanations that reflect a deep understanding of content.

Enhances Argumentation and Communication Skills

ADI consistently improves students’ ability to construct, critique, and defend scientific arguments. Students who participate in ADI write stronger reports and express their reasoning more clearly—both in writing and through classroom discussions.

Boosts Science Achievement and Process Skills

Students in ADI classrooms outperform their peers on science achievement tests and demonstrate stronger science process skills compared to traditional instruction. ADI has shown especially strong results in chemistry, biology, and physical science.
